Smithfield business loses $36,000 in scam

Posted

SMITHFIELD — A Smithfield business was reportedly scammed out of $36,000. The incident is under investigation.

Smithfield Police said a supervisor at Lowe’s Home Improvement at 1330 N. Brightleaf Blvd. received a phone call prior to closing on June 30. The caller claimed they worked with Lowe’s and a payment had not been made to a vendor for a recent delivery to the Smithfield store.

According to reports, the scammer instructed the supervisor to take money from the business and transfer it to Bitcoin to pay the vendor. The supervisor reportedly took $36,000 in cash and went to a Bitcoin ATM in Raleigh and transferred the money to an account as requested by the unknown caller.

Only after completing the transaction did the supervisor realize the caller was not from Lowe’s corporate office, rather it was a scam.

Police said they are investigating, but it is unlikely the money can be recovered.
