Midway held a jersey retirement ceremony Friday to celebrate one of its most accomplished baseball alums.
SPIVEY'S CORNER — Midway alum Matthew Barefoot was honored before the team's home opener against Triton Friday.
Barefoot, who helped the Raiders claim the 2014 NCHSAA 2A Baseball State Championship and was named tourney MVP, had his No. 8 jersey retired during a pregame ceremony.
The Dunn native collected over 100 hits, posted a .383 batting average and scored close to 80 runs during his career at Midway. He took NCHSAA 2A Player of the Year honors as a senior.
As a member of Campbell University's team from 2016 to 2019, Barefoot was a standout hitter. He earned a Freshman All-American nod in 2017, then helped the Camels to a Big South Conference tournament title - while claiming MVP honors - the following season.
He was drafted by the Houston Astros in 2019 and starred for the Fayetteville Woodpeckers last summer before being called up.
He is currently assigned to the Astros' double-A affiliate Corpus Christi Hooks.
