Playoffs roundup: Soccer teams battle in first round

Posted

ANGIER — Down early, Harnett Central couldn't complete its comeback during the opening round of this year's North Carolina High School Athletic Association state playoffs, falling 5-3 at home to Orange Monday.

No. 23 seed Orange (10-7-1) advances to a second-round date with seventh-seeded Cape Fear (15-3-2) on Thursday.

No. 10 Central trailed 3-0 through the first 10 minutes of play before Ava Hollingsworth skyrocketed a shot from 20-plus yards to cut the deficit.  The Lady Trojans drew within one moments later when Galilea Ruiz pushed a shot to the net from just outside the box, creating a 3-2 margin at halftime.

But the visitors tacked on two more goals in the second half, with the home club scoring one in the final two minutes, to make it 5-3.

Central finishes with a 16-5 overall record, collecting the inaugural All American Conference tournament championship before earning its first postseason bid since 2018.

Hobbton dominates in opener

For the first time in over five years, Hobbton's girls soccer team won a state playoff game, shutting out Triangle Math & Science 6-0 at home Monday.

No. 7 Hobbton (16-1-2) moves on to host 10th-seeded Eno River (10-6-1) Thursday in the second round of the 1A East bracket.

Camila Hernandez led the way with two goals as the Lady Wildcats jumped to a 5-0 halftime advantage.

Nicole Hernandez and McKayla Harris tied for a game-high two assists. Nicole Hernandez, Josie Blackman, Brianna Ragnel and Monica Hernandez each scored in the win.

Other local scores:

Hunt 8, Western Harnett 0.

Tuesday, May 17

North Johnston 1, Midway 0.
