This week's hoops roundup begins with a look at the Overhills basketball team, who started the week with another impressive win.
SPRING LAKE — The Overhills boys basketball team remained unbeaten on the young season, topping former Patriot Athletic Conference foe Cape Fear, 75-66, at home Monday.
Jags (3-0) forward Damien Robinson ended with a team-high 21 points and 18 rebounds.
Jamori McDougald added 12 points and Ayden Gittens, the team’s top scorer and Bennie Pollock Memorial Tournament MVP, scored nine as Overhills jumped out to a 20-4 lead.
Cape Fear (1-1), behind Masaun Bryant (29 points) and RJ McDonald (16 points) rallied to get within 37-34 at the half.
But an athletically-gifted Jags squad held the visitors to just 12 points in the third period while netting 17 of their own, creating the necessary breathing room to keep its streak alive.
Meanwhile, the Overhills girls began the evening struggling to defend college prospect Jayda Angel, eventually falling 78-38 to Cape Fear.
Angel had a game-high 31 points to lead three Lady Colts players in double figures.
Lady Jags (1-2) forward Eva McRae ended with a team-high 12 points in the loss.
Both Overhills teams are back in action Wednesday, traveling to non-conference opponent Southern Lee.
