To the editor:

The recent decision by the three new commissioners shows the citizens of this county they can make decisions without knowing all the facts.

Previous Boards of Commissioners have funded nonprofits to save the county money. These nonprofits provide services to county citizens at a lower cost than the county can provide, if the county could provide the service at all. This saves the county thousands of dollars each year.

The nonprofit committee that makes the recommendation to the commissioners each year works hard to insure all the nonprofits meet the standards set forth by their regulations. They check to be sure each nonprofit has provided documentation establishing their nonprofit status. They look at financial reports for each nonprofit to be sure money is being spent for the proper purpose. If a nonprofit received county funds last year, was the money spent as requested?

The committee is made up of citizens wanting to be sure all tax dollars are spent to get the most bang for the buck. I doubt the new commissioner even bothered to attend a nonprofit committee meeting to learn about the work they do for the citizens of Harnett County each year. I guess we are stuck with these kind of decisions, because you can’t fix stupid.
