“Jurassic World: Dominion,” the latest and potentially final installment in the long-running series (I’m a firm believer in the “never say never” philosophy), is another fun ride that includes brave heroes, evil villains, and nonstop action.
The film picks up four years after the last installment, “Fallen World,” where dinosaurs have been brought back from extinction, spreading across the world, disrupting life. As a newly married bride tosses her bouquet in the air, a flying reptile passes by and snatches it.
In Nevada, a team led by Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) breaks into a locked facility late at night to free captured dinosaurs.
“Are you saving these dinosaurs because they need us, or to absolve yourself?” Claire is asked.
In the Sierra Nevada mountain range, a team of riders on horseback led by Claire’s partner and paramour, Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), are corralling the reptiles.
“We’re going to get you someplace safe,” he tells one of the creatures as he pets him, calming it down.
In this world, you still do not need to know the difference between Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex. You just have to know that if you come against any one of them, they will swallow you whole or in bite-size pieces.
In their secluded cabin in the woods, Claire and Owen are also sheltering the teenage Maisie (Isabella Sermon), the cloned granddaughter of billionaire Benjamin Lockwood. Claire used to work for the Lockwood Foundation, which helped rescue the dinosaurs.
The young girl is frustrated that she cannot venture far beyond the cabin. Claire muses that they are hiding the truth from her about who she really is.
“Why do we dig? Because paleontology is science. And science is truth,” says Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), who reunites with co-stars from the original “Jurassic Park” trilogy, Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum).
Meanwhile, Dr. Lewis Dodgson (Campbell Scott), heads of the evil Biosyn Corporation, is arranging to have Maisie, who was kidnapped along with a cloned baby raptor, delivered to him.
“She’s the most valuable intellectual property on the planet.”
The intrepid Claire and Owen travel around the world and use old contacts to rescue Maisie.
There are some great action sequences that are still vital and unique to this franchise. To date, none of “James Bond,” “Indiana Jones,” or any of the “Star Wars” characters have ever been chased by any form of dinosaur over buildings and on a motorcycle trying to catch a speeding plane.
