A man riding an all terrain vehicle in the street collided with his 14-year-old stepson playing basketball on Wednesday afternoon landing both of them in a local trauma center, according to police.
Patrolman Juan C. Fernandez, of the Dunn Police Department, reported that Luis Jovito Gonzalez Marrero, 37, of 114 Jupiter Drive, Dunn, was operating a Yamaha ATV on Jupiter Drive between Saturn Street and Moon Circle. Marrero was traveling in a northwesterly direction at a speed greater than the posted speed limit of 35 mph, Fernandez reported.
Police say Marrero was ejected from the ATV in the collision.
Officer Fernandez found both of the injured on the front lawn at their home address. Dunn Emergency Services personnel responded to the crash.
Due to the nature and mechanism of their injuries, both were transported by paramedics to WakeMed in Raleigh. They were treated and released.
Fernandez charged Marrero with speeding 40 mph in a 35-mph zone, failing to register a motor vehicle, failing to reduce speed to avoid a collision, operating a vehicle with no insurance and operating a motor vehicle without a helmet.
