Livingstone crowned CIAA champ at Chicora

DUNN — Chicora Golf Club welcomed eight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) teams this week, hosting the league’s men’s golf championship for the first time ever.

In the end, it was Xavier Proctor and Joel Basalaine who tied for top medalist honors by posting matching two-round totals of 141, helping Livingstone College claim this year’s CIAA title on Friday.

Proctor, who tied for the low round Thursday with a 2-under-par 69, closed Day 2 with a 1-over 72. Basalaine shot 70, then 71, while teammates Ronald Otile and Emmanuel Jakissa tied with a total score of 150 to round out four LC players earning top-10 individual finishes.

Virginia Union (team score of 601) took runner-up, led by Alkin Barkely who shot a 69 on opening day and eventually finished with a 143 total. Hayden Garcia (148) carded 74’s in each round, marking the second VU player to land in the top 10.

Meanwhile, host team Fayetteville State University (609) earned third place as three Broncos cracked the top 10.

Shaun Wixson came to the clubhouse Friday boasting a field-topping 1-under, making his two-day total of 145 good enough for fourth overall in the individual standings.

Sanford natives Zack Martin (148) and Brandon Jones (149), both of whom made the 2022 CIAA Southern Division All-Tournament Team, also claimed top-10 finishes for the Broncos.

Virginia State (653), Johnson C. Smith (655), Elizabeth City State (726), St. Augustine's (851) and Winston-Salem State (859) rounded out the rest of this year's field.
