Lillington man stars during Senior Games

Posted

Lillington’s John Robbins was one of the dozens of local athletes to take part in this year’s Mid Carolina Senior Games, held April 20 through May 6.

Robbins, 67, won 17 medals in various Olympic-themed events. He was a standout in the track events, mostly hosted at nearby Campbell University, scoring seven medals in runs as short as the 50-meter dash and as long as 5K.

Robbins also excelled in six different swimming competitions, two jumping events, the shot put and discus. He marked the latter being his hardest events, having used Youtube videos as coaches to prepare, and listed long-distance running as his favorite.

In its 36th year, the Games encompassed Harnett, Cumberland and Sampson counties for residents age 50 and older is one of 52 of its kind statewide.

Athletes also competed in other sports such as bowling, corn hole, horseshoes and mini golf. Silver Arts – visual, literary, heritage and performing subcategories – were also a part of the two-week event.
