Lady Camels’ 2022 soccer schedule set

Defending Big South champs prep for 17-match slate

Head coach Jeff Gross has announced the 2022 Campbell women’s soccer schedule. The defending Big South Conference regular-season champions open the 17-match schedule on Aug. 18, and will host eight matches.

The slate features four teams that made the NCAA tournament last season.

“I have appreciated hearing expert versions for how coaches at Campbell get their teams and players to compete at such a high level,” Gross said. “Pressure is a privilege — we’ve all likely heard the quote before, and we were all reminded of this recently.”

Nonconference slate

Following preseason exhibitions at home against Elon University, on Aug. 9, and at The Citadel, on Aug. 13, the Fighting Lady Camels open their regular-season campaign at home against Mercer on Aug. 18. The contest will be the 21st between the former A-Sun Conference rivals and first since 2010.

Three straight road games against 2021 NCAA tournament teams follow the home opener, starting with back-to-back games against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents.

The road swings begin at Clemson on Aug. 21, marking the first ever meeting against the Tigers.

Four days later, Campbell makes a short trip to face North Carolina State on Aug. 25. The Lady Camels battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw against the Wolfpack in last season’s home opener.

Liberty, who earned an automatic berth to the NCAA tourney after winning the A-Sun last season, marks the end of the road swing on Aug. 28.

Campbell returns home on Sept. 1, hosting Richmond, before heading back on the road to face Coastal Carolina, Sept. 4, and Wofford on Sept. 8.

The nonconference schedule concludes at home as the Lady Camels host in-state rivals UNC Wilmington on Sept. 15.

Big South matchups

The conference portion of the schedule starts on Sept. 21 as the Lady Camels hit the road to face Radford. Campbell has defeated the Highlanders in the semifinals of the Big South Championships each of the past two seasons.

CU welcomes Winthrop to Buies Creek on Sept. 24 before hosting High Point in a rematch of last season’s conference tournament final on Sept. 28.

Campbell alternates home and away games for the remainder of the conference schedule, including the final week in which the Lady Camels travel to UNC Asheville on Oct. 22 before closing out at home against Longwood on Oct. 26.

Matthews to host championships

The Big South Championships will be a four-team tournament with all games played at the Matthews Sportsplex.

The semifinal is set for Nov. 3, followed by the tournament final on Nov. 6.

CU went 12-4-2 overall last season, winning its first Big South regular-season crown in program history. The Lady Camels held one of the top-ranked offenses in the nation, posting the seventh-best scoring offense with 2.78 goals per game and ranking fourth overall in points per game at 8.61.

“Campbell women’s soccer players love to compete, enjoy challenges, and believe in Campbell,” Gross said.

“This schedule is a reflection of the combined efforts of coaches who understand the nature of these women and this program. We are playing good teams who are well coached and this will bring out the best in all of us.”
