EUGENE, Ore. — Campbell’s Athanas Kioko finished fifth overall in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Track and Field Championships Wednesday night at historic Hayward Field.
Kioko earned his fifth All-American honor of his career by posting a time of 28 minutes, 17.17 seconds.
The race began with Kioko storming out to a 100-meter lead ahead of the rest of the pack and maintaining a 10-seconds advantage through over half the race. Kioko ultimately rejoined the peloton for the final five laps.
In the final stint, he gave up the lead and finished one second behind his personal- and school-record best time.
Dylan Jacobs of Notre Dame finished first in 28:12.32, followed by Alex Maier of Oklahoma State, Northern Arizona’s Abdihamid Nur in third and Stanford’s Cole Sprout in the fourth.
The Camel standout’s 10,000m time of 28:25.69 at the NCAA East Prelims on May 25 was the fastest among the 24 national qualifiers.
He also made the NCAA Championships field in the 5000m with a time of 13:38.55, ranked 11th fastest.
Kioko concludes his nationals trip on Friday with the 5,000m final. During last year’s final, he earned All-American status after finishing third overall and setting the fourth-fastest time in collegiate history.
Friday’s final from Eugene, Oregon is scheduled for 10:55 p.m. EST and can be viewed live on ESPN2.
