HCS shortens school day

Class will dismiss 10 minutes earlier for Harnett County Schools students this year.

The Harnett County Schools Board of Education reviewed and unanimously approved the recommendation from HSC Superintendent Dr. Aaron Fleming during Monday’s meeting.

Fleming said upon his arrival to Harnett County, the schools did not have enough instruction time required by law to cover inclement weather and 10 minutes were added to the instructional day.

He said the state has started to look at designating five remote days to make up for weather cancellations and other issues.

“If we ever get into a situation where we may be out for several days, it has been the case in the past and I hope it is in the future, the state will forgive some days as well,” Fleming said. “Dropping the 10 minutes allows schools to build their day based off their original schedule. It doesn’t shorten the day for teachers, but does shorten instruction time.”
