Happy Fathers’ Day: The family name

Posted

Daddy, you carry the family name and shoulder it well;

Family forms tight links, a kindred spirit that’s the same;

This identification helps to establish who we are,

So honored that we have the same family name.

Pops, you strengthen the family name,

Which distinguishes one family from another.

That name is the family description — our village,

Special bond between sister and brother.

One may wonder: “Who am I? Where do I belong?”

The answer is always close to the family.

Shaped by where we were born. Stories. Choices. History.

Genealogy and traits are planted, so water the family tree.

Family is a place to belong. It’s origin and destiny.

Like Joshua, who chose the Almighty for his family to serve,

His household had a safe place to belong.

So teach kids, lead by example and make good choices,

Beyond just teaching right from wrong.

Dad, like Joshua, you chose the Lord,

Took the family to church, while your babies grew in the faith

Still so glad to serve in the Lord’s church

While pressing to do what God saith.

The sacred nature of parenting.

A parental bond the models the Heavenly Father.

And when David defeated Goliath,

King Saul amazingly asked, “Who’s son is this?”

David said, “Jesse is my dad.”

The king knew there was parental influence,

Since David was just a little lad.

Dad, you carry the family name and you wear it proudly;

Handed down from ancestry, and like flowers that bloom,

Offsprings are blessed in a family with meaning

So the celebration is not limited to the third Sunday in June.

What’s in a name?
