Fire destroys Dunn duplex: Couple escapes with few belongings

Posted

A Dunn couple escaped with their lives and two laundry baskets full of clothes in a devastating fire that destroyed their home on Sunday morning.

“I woke up and realized we were in trouble,” said a man who escaped and asked not to be identified. “We got out and I went around back to see what was burning. The whole deck and roof was on fire.”

Harnett County 911 received a call for help and dispatched Dunn Emergency Services to a duplex at 384 Mixon Road at 8:39 a.m.

First units arriving on the scene reported finding fire already through the roof of the structure and the remainder of the roof sagging. This prevented firefighters from being able to attack the blaze from inside due to the risk of collapse.

Due to no fire hydrants in the area, water supply was an issue. Tankers were summoned to form a water shuttle. Mutual aid was obtained from Erwin, Plain View, Spivey’s Corner, Benson and Meadow fire departments. Quick response from these departments prevented Dunn from running out of water during fire suppression efforts and enabled the protection of surrounding homes as winds picked up Sunday morning.

No one was injured during the incident.

The other half of the duplex was vacant. The entire building was a near total loss.

Dunn Emergency Services Director Gary Whitman said the couple was “offered assistance from the American Red Cross, but they declined. They indicated they had family in the area to assist them.”

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday.
