BUIES CREEK — Campbell football has shifted its 2022 season opener against The Citadel up two days, now kicking off on Thursday, Sept. 1.
The opener, originally set for Saturday, Sept. 3, will now kickoff at 6 p.m. inside Barker-Lane Stadium. The game will be the first meeting between the Camels and Bulldogs, and the first of five home dates for CU in 2022.
Campbell will also host North Carolina Central on Oct. 1 before beginning Big South Conference play on Oct. 8 against Charleston Southern, also welcoming Robert Morris on Oct. 15.
The Camels also host in-state foe Gardner-Webb in the second installment of the NC East/West Barbecue Bowl on Nov. 12.
All kickoff times will be announced at a later date.
In 2021, Campbell produced three Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-Americans, including Big South Defensive Player of the Year Brevin Allen, who posted a record-setting season with 17 1/2 tackles for loss. Allen leads six returners on the defensive side from the 2021 team
CU also brings back eight starters on offense, including Hajj-Malik Williams, the 2020 Big South Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
Also coming back are All-Big South performers in tight end Julian Hill, offensive tackle Tyler McLellan, as well as 2021 freshman All-American linebacker C.J. Tillman.
Last season, Campbell ranked fourth in the FCS in turnovers gained and defensive touchdowns. On the offensive side, the Camels led the Big South in passing offense, while setting a school record for passing yards (2,901) and passing touchdowns (24).
During the offseason, CU coach Mike Minter hauled in the FCS’ No. 1 ranked incoming freshmen recruiting class. The incoming 2022 class includes 19 freshmen, with 12 rated as three- or four-star recruits.
