County soccer tourney kicks off season Monday

Posted

All four high school soccer teams in Harnett County are set to jockey for bragging rights next week.

The Harnett County Boys Soccer Kickoff Tournament will see Harnett Central welcome Triton, Western Harnett and Overhills starting Monday.

Opening the two-day tourney, a promising matchup between Overhills and Triton features two athletic clubs.

The Hawks finished third in the All American Conference with a 15-8-1 overall record last season, which included a series sweep of the Jags, who held a 7-11 mark.

Triton figures to have Omar Hernandez, the team’s leader in goals among returners. Overhills goalie Daniel Sykes provides protection between the posts, finishing 12th in the state with 224 saves a year ago.

In the nightcap, Western Harnett takes on host team Central.

The Eagles look to reverse their misfortunes following a 3-11 campaign that included two blowout losses to the Trojans.

Central, on the other hand, is coming off its best season in recent years, finishing 12-6 overall and tying for first in the AAC with a 10-2 mark. Trojans striker Adrian Flores likely returns for his junior season after pacing the group in goals as a sophomore.

This spring saw Central’s girls win the kickoff championship with a 4-1 victory over Triton as Emily Parker netted a pair of goals in the final to claim tourney MVP honors.

The boys’ opening-round winners advance to the title game Wednesday, preceded by the third-place match between Day 1 losers.
