For the first time in its history, Chicora Golf Club sets to host the CIAA Championship Tournament.
DUNN — Chicora Golf Club is set to host the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship Tournament starting Thursday.
Eight teams come to Harnett County with hopes of taking home league title honors when the eventual champ is crowned during Friday's closing round.
Whit Bradham, general manager of Chicora Golf Club, says host team Fayetteville State University chose the course to house the important event.
"Well, it's big," Bradham said about what he hopes is the first of more to come after Chicora inked a three-year contract with the league.
"It's good publicity for us and hopefully, if they enjoy our course, that'll be even better because they'll go out and tell other people about it.
"It's encouraging to us to know that we can get our brand and image out there even more, being able to host a college golf tournament which most courses don't get the opportunity. So, we're very fortunate."
A six-man FSU squad is led by Sanford natives Zack Martin and Brandon Jones, both of whom made the 2022 CIAA Southern Division All-Tournament Team following top-five finishes at last week's event at Anderson Creek Golf Club.
The other teams competing are Elizabeth City State, Johnson C. Smith, Livingstone, St. Augustine's, Winston-Salem State, Virginia State and Virginia Union.
Bradham added that there is free admission to the general public, and spectators can rent golf carts to follow the action. Regulations are as governed by the NCAA guidelines.
An opening ceremony will precede Thursday's round with first tee times set for 8:30 a.m.
