CFCA set for 3rd state-title showing in 4 years

ERWIN — Cape Fear Christian Academy returns to the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association 1A Softball State Championship series Friday.

Top-seeded CFCA (17-4) plays host to No. 2 seed Pungo Christian Academy (19-1) for this weekend’s best-of-three showdown.

It marks a second consecutive state-title game trip, and third in the past four years, for Sterling Holmes’ Lady Eagles. The last time they hosted a tournament final, in 2019, the Lady Eagles scored a 9-6 victory over Pungo to take the championship trophy.

The two haven’t matched since CFCA won last spring’s meeting 6-2.

Having won nine of its last 10, the Lady Eagles have rolled through this year’s tourney with back-to-back shutouts.

Claire Parker, one of the few returners from the 2019 title team, earned a complete-game shutout in the postseason opener against Northeast Academy on May 12. The senior struck out 10 while giving up just two hits to get the 6-0 victory.

Fellow senior pitcher Kim Bordeaux was just as impressive in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Lawrence Academy, also going the distance while allowing just two hits and collecting 15 punchouts.

The Lady Eagles bats have been just as effective, totaling 19 hits through two games. Rhyleigh Horne has had multi-hit efforts in each contest and leads the team this playoff with three RBIs, two coming against Lawrence.

Game 1 of the championship series from Erwin is set for Friday at noon. Game 2 will be at noon Saturday, with a potential winner-takes-all tiebreaker played shortly after.
