Camels hold first open scrimmage Thursday

BUIES CREEK — Three weeks before opening the 2022 season, Campbell will hold the first of three open scrimmages on Thursday.

Start time from Barker-Lane Stadium is set for 6 p.m., with the local public welcomed to watch for free. Seating will be limited to the east side of the stadium in Sections 110, 111, 112, 113 and 114.

The Camels, who opened preseason camp on Aug. 2, will also host open scrimmages on Aug. 18 and Aug. 25.

CU’s final scrimmage will be held in conjunction with Traditions 101, a new event to learn the traditions of a Fighting Camel football game day.

Led by head coach Mike Minter in his 10th season at Buies Creek, Campbell returns a combined 14 starters on the offense and defense. In addition to 61 returning letterwinners, a bevy of newcomers make up the Football Championship Subdivision's top-ranked recruiting class.

Campbell defensive end Brevin Allen was named the 2022 Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year – headlining 10 CU selections on the league's preseason team – while the Camels were picked second in the coaches' poll.

The 2022 season opener against The Citadel is set for Thursday, Sept. 1 at Barker-Lane Stadium.
