Byrd takes flight during latest wins

Posted

Most of Kennedy Byrd’s contributions to her South Johnston softball team in 2022 have come from inside the circle.

The Lady Trojans (9-1, 4-0 QCC) ace helped herself in a big way last week, however, collecting five hits and seven RBIs as the club remains perfect in Quad County 3A Conference play.

The highlight came during a 17-1 blowout win over C.B. Aycock on March 22 when the hard-swinging senior swatted two home runs.

“My teammates were just as shocked as I was. It’s pretty shocking when you hit two home runs in one game,” Byrd said in a message to The Daily Record, also noting her two-homer outing against Corinth Holders in 2020.

Designated as a “business trip,” with the top two teams facing off, Byrd lit up the Golden Falcons for a double in the first inning that helped give the Lady Trojans a 3-1 lead heading into the second. Her third and fourth hits were both deep flies, one in the fourth and another in the fifth during a seven-run frame that signaled the run rule.

She also notched a fourth win as starting pitching, giving up just three hits while striking out six.

After leading South in all major hitting categories last year, most teams had decided to pitch around the Louisburg College commit. Such was the case Friday at Southern Wayne, but Byrd’s teammates took advantage during a 25-1 win.

“All around, we’re a great team,” she said. “Defensively and offensively, we always play as a team and we always have a great time on the field together.”

Byrd was walked three times, but still added two runs and finished with one of the squad’s 18 hits.

South hopes to take its victory streak into double digits with Hunt and East Wake on deck.

Below is Byrd’s acceptance speech along with her responses to questions from The Daily Record staff.

ACCEPTANCE SPEECH: I would like to thank my coaches, teammates and my family.

FAVORITE SPORTS TEAM: I’ve been keeping up with Florida State softball and I’m hoping they’ll make it to the NCAA World Series this year. I’m a UNC fan as well.

FUNNIEST TEAMMATE: Kenzie Adams. She really always keeps us laughing on and off the field. And her energy in the dugout is why we’re so loud every game.

FAVORITE SONG: “Dinosaur” by Hank Williams. It’s on our pregame playlist and we all sing it before the game.
