Bizzell to seek 7th term as JoCo sheriff

Lifelong Johnston County resident Steve Bizzell announced Tuesday that he will seek a seventh term as Johnston County sheriff. Bizzell was first elected in 1998 after serving under two former sheriffs. He is now one of North Carolina’s longest-serving elected county sheriffs.

“I love being Sheriff of Johnston County, and I look forward to continuing to serve as your Sheriff, to ensure that the quality of law enforcement services that our citizens have become accustomed to continues,” Bizzell said. “I am truly blessed to have the quality of men and women who assist me everyday in carrying out the duties of the Office of Sheriff.”

Bizzell served as president of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association (NCSA) in 2007-08. He held the position of chairman of the NCSA’s Executive Committee from 2008 to 2009 and continues to serve as a board member. In 2014, Bizzell was selected by Gov. Pat McCrory to serve on the Governor’s DWI Task Force and was elected by sheriffs in District 4 to serve on the N.C. Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.

In 2016, he received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, among the most prestigious awards presented by the governor of North Carolina. The Johnston County Chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars, recognized him in March for “maintaining, preserving, and protecting the lawful rights of all citizens.”

“Johnston County continues to be the fastest growing county in North Carolina and I understand the number one priority of government is public safety, and we are always preparing to meet the challenges associated with this growth,” Bizzell said.

“As sheriff, I will continue to be proactive in providing our staff with advanced training, technology, and the equipment necessary for them to be effective and efficient but more so safe, in providing public safety for our citizens. Our deputies are held to a higher standard; we will use common sense in applying the law, and treat people like we would want to be treated.”

“I will continue to work hard for the people of Johnston County, so that we can keep Johnston County a safe community (in which) to live, work, and raise our children,” Bizzell said. “I take great pride in the accomplishments that we, working together as a team, have made over the years and look forward to the opportunity to continue the progress and serve the citizens of Johnston County as your Sheriff.”
