Spike in water bills involved ‘personnel issue’

Harnett County releases statement, plans meeting to address concerns

A spike in water bills in western Harnett County has created a stir among consumers, who have questioned the soaring prices they were told to pay in July — quadruple what they paid the month before.

County officials released a statement Friday explaining that their water usage had been underreported for several months, “resulting in bills which were lower than they should have been based on the customers’ actual usage.”

“As a result, more recent bills for these customers may reflect higher than normal water usage. We want to assure customers that they are not being charged for water they did not use as these bills reflect accurate water usage,” county officials stated in the release.

The lower bills were blamed on a personnel issue that was “addressed as soon as it was discovered,” according to the release.
A public meeting for any concerned customers will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the Highland Middle School auditorium, 345 Highland School Road, Sanford.

Harnett Regional Water issued an apology for any inconvenience this may have caused customers in the affected areas. Customers, who have questions about their bills, can also contact Harnett Regional Water at 910-893-7575, where representatives are working with customers to address these issues on a case-by-case basis. There may be an increase in call volumes and call duration as representatives work to address questions.
