Longtime bus driver James Lathon was named Johnston County Public Schools Bus Driver of the Year. Mr. Lathon has been a bus driver with the county since April 2009, and has worked primarily in the South Johnston area.
“He is one in a million. He has a huge heart and loves kids. He’ll do anything for anyone,” Sharon Fogleman, transportation supervisor for Johnston County Public Schools, said. “I wish I had 300 more drivers like him. I just love him.”
He has been described as, “loyal, trustworthy, honest, protective and extremely conscientious.” Mr. Lathon is one of the first drivers to pull out of the lot in the mornings but he always makes sure to report early to help out his fellow drivers.
Mr. Lathon is widely respected and beloved around the area and he has built strong relationships with students, parents, staff and administrators. Mr. Lathon is always in demand to drive for field trips, especially at Early College and Career and Technical Leadership Academy.
“He’s just a wonderful person and an excellent bus driver,” Ms. Fogleman said.
