PORT ORANGE, Fla. — Robert Lee (Bob) Smith, age 86, passed away on Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, at Halifax Medical Hospice House in Port Orange, Fla. He was born Dec. 16, 1931, in Angier, N.C., and served in the U.S. Army 1st Calvary during the Korean War. He lived by Red Skelton’s quote, “I personally believe that each of us was put here for a purpose to build, not to destroy. If I can make people smile, then I have served my purpose for God.” He never wavered from that purpose even through his recent sickness as stated by all his caretakers.
He worked for GE as a consumer service technician in appliance repair in Florida and previously owned and operated Smith’s TV Service in Raleigh, N.C. He was predeceased by his parents, Jesse Calvin and Mattie Starling Smith; brother, Harold Smith; brother, Billy Ray Smith; sister, Shirley Smith; son, Derrick Thomas Smith; and daughter, Cynthia Marie Smith.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Carol; brother, Larry Watts Smith (Becky); sons, Danny Smith (Norma) of Angier, N.C., and James Smith (Debra) of Wilmington, N.C.; daughters, Joy Hill (Mike) of Clayton, N.C., and Cathy Haas (Conrad) of Suffolk, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration memorial service will be held at Plainview Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall at 2712 Plainview Church Road, Angier, N.C. on Oct. 20, 2018, at 2 p.m. Private family interment will be at Daytona Memorial Gardens at a future date.
