Program shows participants tips for healthy cooking on a budget

In recognition of National Nutrition Month, the Harnett County Health Department and Cooperative Extension-Harnett County Center sponsored an educational session titled “Healthy Cooking on a Budget” March 7. This free session provided participants with tips on meal planning and how to prepare low-cost and healthy meal options.

Whether it’s starting the day off right with a healthy breakfast or fueling before an athletic event, the foods you choose can make a real difference. Preparing your foods to go further by planning meals and snacks in advance can also help reduce food loss and waste and save money.

Presenters included Belinda Rayner with Harnett County Health Department, and Kittrane Sanders and Greg Huneycutt with the Cooperative Extension. Healthy options for breakfast, lunch and dinner were highlighted during the program. Featured recipes included a Fruit Parfait, Chicken Wrap, and Chicken Tortilla Soup. Participants had the opportunity to make chocolate hummus dip for the dessert option.
