Preview of this week’s basketball games


There’s a full slate of local head-to-head matchups in high school basketball this week. Here’s a look ahead at this week’s games.


It’ll all start off with a clash of the Trojans tonight as Harnett Central hosts South Johnston. The Central girls (3-1) have looked strong since dropping their opener against the championship-winning Overhills in the Harnett County Tipoff Tournament, picking up wins over Triton (64-28), Cleveland (60-28) and West Johnston (38-32). They’ll look to keep that going against a South team that’s still in search of its first win of the season after losing two tough games against Western Harnett (47-41) and at Triton (51-39).

South’s boys (3-0) will have a tough fight to stay unbeaten. They’ve looked strong in wins over Midway (66-42), Western Harnett (60-55) and at Triton (52-49 in overtime), but they’ll face a battle-tested Central team (2-2). Central has had an up-and-down start to they year. They also dropped their opener to the eventual champion Overhills (63-59), but bounced back with a convincing win over Western Harnett (61-41). They followed that up with a tough loss at Cleveland (70-56), but again bounced back with a strong performance against West Johnston (68-39).

Triton’s boys and girls teams will also be at home tonight, playing against Fuquay-Varina. The girls (1-3) are coming off their first win of the season, while the boys (1-2) look to bounce back after a tough loss in their second overtime game of the season.

Everyone else is on the road tonight. Midway (girls 5-0, boys 3-2) will travel for its second meetings with Princeton. Overhills (girls 3-0, boys 3-1) will play at Patriot Conference rival Terry Sanford. Western (girls 2-2, boys 1-3) will visit Northwood. Cape Fear Christian Academy (girls 3-3, boys 8-2) will play at Greenfield.


Thursday’s games will be headlined by a rematch between Midway and South. The lady Raiders got off to a hot start with a convincing win at South 43-24. South’s boys also had a comfortable win in the first matchup, topping the Raiders 66-42.

Central will host a rematch against West Johnston, having already swept the Wildcats on their home court. Western will travel to Fayetteville to take on Cape Fear high school.


CFCA, which does not have a football program, will host its homecoming game Friday night against Thales Academy.

Triton and Midway will cap off this week’s rivalry games with a matchup in Erwin.

Central will host a rematch against Cleveland, and Western will host a rematch against West Johnston.
