Erwin police have arrested three men and a juvenile in connection with a shooting at the Sunshine Car Wash on Jan. 3 that left two people hospitalized. Police suspect the shooting occurred when a drug deal turned into a robbery around 1 a.m.

“We are pretty sure it was some kind of narcotics transaction,” said Erwin police Chief Jonathan Johnson. “We’re confident the victims and suspects knew each other and were meeting at a car wash at 1 a.m. We think a some point it became a robbery.”

Accounts from the suspects and victims in the case have been inconsistent during the investigation, according to Johnson, but surveillance footage helped police piece together what happened.

“There was video surveillance in the area,” he said. “So we know part of what happened.”

A woman was found in one of the bays of the car wash suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound and after a subsequent call, officers found a man on D Street who had suffered a gunshot wound to the arm. He was seeking assistance from police when he was found.

Both victims have since been released from the hospital and are expected to fully recover, according to Johnson.

Coralee Hunt, 33, of Dunn was arrested a day after the shooting and remains in jail. Joining her in the detention center is 24-year-old Joseph Blue of Dunn, 21-year-old Dancy Donnell of Fayetteville and 20-year-old Donovan McGill of Erwin. A 16-year-old, who has not been named, was also arrested and is being held in the juvenile justice system.

All five suspects in the case, including the teen, are charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

The adult suspects were all given a $375,000 secured bond.

More charges could be pending, according to Johnson.

No charges have been filed against either of the victims at the present time, he said.

“We believe we’ve got a very strong case,” he said. “I’m confident in our case. I’ve spoken with the district attorney and additional charges could be filed at a later time.”
