Benson announced the start of paving on Main Street by the North Carolina Department of Transportation will start Wednesday night. The paving will extend from U.S. 301 east along Main Street, cross the overpass at Interstate 95, to near the town limits on N.C. 50. It was set to begin in the first quarter of 2019, but NCDOT officials notified the town Tuesday things would get underway a lot sooner than expected.
Contractors will work from 7 tonight until 6 Thursday morning and work the nights of Oct. 11, 14, 15, and 16 during the same times.
The paving will begin on the outside lanes, then move into the inside lanes, followed by the intersections. Main Street will still have active lanes open during paving operations, but some intersections may be closed with detour signage placed before the closure.
Contractors are asking that all vehicles be moved from parking spots along Main Street before paving begins at 7 p.m.
