'No additional safety concerns' after student found with gun on campus

The quick response of educators and school officials helped maintain safety at Triton High after someone reported a student had a gun on campus Thursday, according to Harnett County Schools spokeswoman Natalie Ferrell.

The 16-year-old student was quickly detained and searched, according to Ferrell. A firearm was found in his possession.

"Due to the awareness and quick response from Triton High School staff, students, and administration, the school was able to intervene immediately, isolate the issue, and maintain the safety of the school," Ferrell said.

With this being an "isolated situation" there are "no additional safety concerns," Ferrell added.

Parents of students at Triton High received a robocall Thursday, informing them that a student was found with a gun on campus.

The caller told parents that someone informed school officials of the possibility that the student had a gun at school and a search of the teen confirmed it. The call also noted it was an “isolated incident."

Deputies with the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

Sheriff Wayne Coats confirmed that the student was on his way to the sheriff’s department at 4 p.m. Thursday.

More details will be posted at mydailyrecord.com as they become available.
