Summers are typically dominated by baseball in Harnett County, but local kids made a splash on the hardwood this summer. The Harnett Strongballers third-, fourth- and fifth-grade teams, along with the Dunn Police Athletic & Activities League’s (PAL) ninth-grade and varsity Wildcats competed in the National Travel Basketball Association (NTBA) National Championships in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Strongballers’ third-grade team won the North Carolina state championship and finished second in the national tournament. The Strongballers’ organization is entirely made up of Harnett County kids, most of whom are from Dunn, Erwin, Angier and Fuquay-Varina.
The PAL teams both made it to the semi-final stage of the national competition but came up short. Similarly, PAL programs are open to all kids in Harnett, Sampson and Johnston counties.
