Midway High School added a fourth state championship to its trophy case in 2018, this time in golf.
The Raiders shot a two-day total of 639 in the NCHSAA 2A Championship at Whispering Pines Country Club, 28 strokes ahead of second place Lake Norman.
Leading Midway was sophomore sensation Logan Patrick, who shot a 144 and claimed an individual state championship. Other team members included Trey Pope (158), Andrew Eldridge (168), Jordan Sullivan (169) and Matthew Faircloth (187).
Midway head coach Glen Patrick, Logan’s father, started Midway’s middle school golf program when Logan was in sixth grade, setting up the Raiders for future success.
“I feel like I’ve lifted the whole world off my shoulders,” said coach Patrick. “These kids right here, a lot of people doubt us. A lot of people didn’t think we had it. We worked hard. We battled together.”
With Patrick returning, the Raiders will likely be favorites to claim the title again in 2019.
