A chain of pet stores with locations throughout the country has announced Dunn will be the location of its newest store.
Petsense, a company providing an assortment of pet needs and services, has announced the company has signed a lease on the old Family Dollar store in the Floral Gardens shopping center in Dunn, near Big Lots. It plans to open in the next several months.
Petsense is a nationwide chain with 165 locations around the country and stores throughout North Carolina.
The stores were started by the same man who started PetSmart, Jim Dougherty. They are similar on a smaller scale to PetSmart stores.
Petsense Director of Real Estate Robin Muir said Dunn is an ideal location for his chain.
“We focus on smaller markets like Dunn for most of our stores,” Mr. Muir said. “It is the ideal size for a Petsense store.”
The nearest stores to the Dunn area are located in Sanford, Kinston and Lumberton.
Mr. Muir said major renovations will be made to the building to make it ready for Petsense.
He estimates it will take between three and four months to get the business operational. A specific schedule for construction of the store will be released soon.
According to the Petsense website, the stores sell natural pet foods and supplies and offer professional grooming services.
In addition to offering pet supplies, Mr. Muir said there will be animals in the store for adoption. There will be no animals for sale in the store at any time.
Mr. Muir said the company will work with the local animal control department to help adopt pets. Most of the adoptions in the store will be dogs and cats, with other animals present at different times.
“We will help the animal shelter adopt out any animals that come in,” Mr. Muir said. “Some of our stores have had snakes, lizards and other animals that people keep as pets.”
He said those adopting pets often become Petsense customers.
“We help them with anything they need for their new pets,” Mr. Muir said.
Petsense will employ between eight and 10 people when fully open and operational.
The first Petsense store opened in 2005 in Castle Rock, Colo.
Per company policy, the Petsense store will be leased. Family Dollar also leased the building when the company operated there.
