The Midway Raiders’ varsity football team lost their home opener Friday evening against Princeton’s Bulldogs, 50-36.

It didn’t take long for either offense to get going in this contest, with two home-run plays to begin the scoring.

First, Midway (1-1) put themselves on the board, thanks to a 67-yard pass from quarterback Carson Calcutt to receiver Dante Blue, who did most of the work with his feet. Then, on the ensuing possession, Princeton (2-0) answered with a 78-yard touchdown run from running back John Lockamy. Both kickers missed their point-after attempts to leave the score knotted at six.

The second quarter saw even more offense, as Midway’s Calcutt earned his second touchdown of the game, this time to receiver Carsse Lucas from four yards out.

With the Raiders now up 13-6, the Bulldogs responded with a quick drive downfield that ended with quarterback Nathan Ramby finding the endzone on a 1-yard run. Running back Lamarr Wilkins put the Bulldogs ahead with a 2-point conversion to make the score 14-13. Wilkins would score again on Princeton’s next drive with a 5-yard run. He added two more points to increase their lead to 22-13 with 1:11 remaining.

Midway displayed their offense’s efficiency on the next possession as Calcutt once again found Lucas from 18 yards out. After a 2-point conversion, the score stood at 22-21 in Princeton’s favor at halftime.

A few long drives after the break made short work of the third quarter.

Princeton struck twice in a row as both Ramby and Lockamy added to their touchdown totals. Another 2-point conversion left the score at 36-21 for the Bulldogs. Not to be outdone, the Raiders responded with yet another Calcutt-to-Lucas touchdown toss for 30 yards to bring Midway within one score heading into the fourth quarter.

Princeton’s Ramby found the end-zone from 3 yards out while Wilkins added two more to make the score 44-28. Midway then scored for the final time on a 24-yard run from Calcutt. The Bulldogs put the bow on their win, with Ramby once again scoring on the ground to bring the final total to 50-36.

For Midway, Carson Calcutt completed 10 of 15 passes for 168 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. He also ran for a score and finished as the lead rusher with 10 carries for 53 yards. Dante Blue led the team in receiving yards with four receptions for 92 yards and a score while Carsse Lucas hauled in three touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, Zack Fann led the Raiders with seven tackles.

Midway returns home next Friday against West Bladen at 7 p.m.
