Man wanted in drive-by shooting surrenders

Search continues for third culprit


One of the men named in a Johnston County drive-by shooting has surrendered to authorities.

According to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, Quashad Powell, 19, gave himself up in Wake County Tuesday afternoon. Powell was wanted in connection with the July 13 shooting that claimed the life of 15-year-old Kaylen Marion Middleton of Clayton and left 20-year-old Tyrese Barnes with a gunshot wound to his foot.

Powell was charged with first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He remains in the Johnston County Detention Center.

A second man named in the shooting, 18-year-old Joshua Caleb Draughon was also taken into custody in Wake County after appearing in court on an unrelated charge. Draughon is also facing counts of first-degree murder and assault with intent to kill.

Authorities are still searching for a third, unidentified suspect who along with Powell and Draughon were accused of fleeing the scene shortly after the shooting which took place around 1:39 a.m. on Blackthorn Court in Clayton.
