Child dies in van crash

Mother charged with impaired driving

A 7-year-old girl died as a result of a Thursday afternoon wreck south of Lillington.

Trooper Eric Mellott of the N.C. Highway Patrol said 42-year-old Theresa Peterson of Lillington was driving south on N.C. 210 near Irene Roberts Road at the time of the crash. The 2004 Ford van she was driving ran off the road to the left and struck a ditch, causing it to overturn.

Three children and two adults were in the van. Seven-year-old Aniyah Peterson was ejected from the vehicle. She was wearing a lap seat belt.

Two 14-year-old twins suffered minor injuries in the crash. The remainder of the passengers were wearing shoulder restraint seat belts.

Trooper Mellot said the child who died was neither 80 pounds nor 8 years old, meaning she should have been restrained in a child safety seat.

Ms. Peterson was arrested and placed in the Harnett County Jail with bond set at $200,000.

She is charged with driving while impaired and felony death by vehicle.

Trooper Mellot said investigators listed that blood samples were taken and Ms. Peterson’s impairment was presumably caused by a drug other than alcohol.

Traffic was detoured for more than two hours as a result of the wreck.
