FOUR OAKS — The Rev. Larry Richard “Ricky” Byrd, age 72, of East Sanders Street, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2020, at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020, at Barbour’s Chapel Advent Christian Church. Mr. Rodney Barbour will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Ricky was born on Sept. 20, 1947, in Johnston County to Zora West Byrd of Four Oaks and the late Rayford M. Byrd. He retired from the U.S. Army (ARNGUS) as a recruiter. After his service to our country, he retired as the service officer with the Johnston County Veterans Office in Smithfield. He also served as past president of the Four Oaks Civitan, and also as the lieutenant governor of the North Carolina East Civitan. Ricky received the call into the ministry and faithfully served as the pastor of Barbour’s Chapel Advent Christian Church outside Four Oaks.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife of 51 years, Susie Wood Byrd; sister-in-law, Joan Clark and husband Jim; brothers-in-law, Eddie Wood and wife Karen, and Gary Wood Sr. and wife Jenise; nieces and nephews, Cindy Tant and husband Scott, Gary Wood Jr., and wife Joanie and Charlie Wood; great-nieces and nephews, Blakley, Eli, Garah and Weston; special family friend, Ralph Hayes; and many loving friends and extended family.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2020, at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Four Oaks and other times at the home.
Flowers are welcomed; however, the family suggests memorials be made to Barbour’s Chapel Advent Christian Church, P.O. Box 357, Four Oaks, NC 27524.
