Hobbton survived a physical game between two good teams to advance in the NCHSAA 1A soccer playoffs with a 1-0 victory over Raleigh Charter High School.
The Wildcats’ winning goal was scored by Uriel Cruz in the second half on an assist by Yahir Montes.
“I thought we played good,” said Hobbton head coach Jonathan Jacobs. “Raleigh Charter is a good team. I knew going into the game that it wasn’t going to be a game we could walk on the field and win, and that we were going to have to fight from the start to the end. And, that’s how it was. Raleigh Charter was good.
“We had a penalty kick called on us about midway the first half and our keeper did a fantastic job saving it. I think that set the tone for the rest of the game. I thought we used that as momentum and we got the goal we needed. We had a couple of chances where their keeper made great saves as well. They had chances where our keeper made some great saves as well. All in all, it was a great soccer fan’s game.”
The Wildcats are now 16-6-1 on the season. They’ll travel to No. 2 seed Voyager Academy (18-3-2) in Durham on Thursday. Coincidentally, the only common opponent between the two teams is Raleigh Charter. Voyager beat them twice, winning 2-1 on Aug. 23 and 4-0 on Oct. 25.
