Erwin started off on the right side of a lopsided game in the Tar Heel District III 10-and-under baseball tournament on Monday, and ended on the wrong side of another in the final.
After rain interrupted Erwin’s game with Western Harnett American on Thursday, the hometown team cruised to a 16-1 victory in three innings to advance to the final against Sandhills.
Sandhills beat Erwin 8-6 in the opening round, the only close game of the entire tournament. But the rematch ended up being a rout, as Sandhills thrashed them 22-3.
Starter Eli Burns was the winning pitcher for Erwin in the first game, giving up one earned run on one hit, five walks and one hit batter, with one strikeout. Brody Ennis pitched a perfect inning in relief with a pair strikeouts.
Conner Parrish, Palmer Ennis and Aiden McNeill each had one hit and two runs scored to lead Erwin. Kaiden Jensen had a triple and a run scored. Brody Ennis and Caleb Flowers each had one hit and one run scored. Austin Williams had one hit. Kymere McNeill and Burns each scored twice. Chase Gregory, Jaylen Johnson and Landon McLamb each scored once.
Alexander Strunk had one hit and Aiden Kirk had one run scored for Western.
The second game went much less smoothly. Jensen and Parrish each managed to get one hit and one run scored. Williams added the third run for Erwin.
Lucas Blackwood had four hits and four runs scored for Sandhills. Jake Grimsley had three hits and four runs scored, and was the winning pitcher.
