Cape Fear Christian Academy has named Kalen Eddings as interim varsity boys basketball coach.
Eddings has already begun working with returning players from a 19-16 team that reached the third round of the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association playoffs.
“Kalen is highly recommended by Ben Miller, the men’s basketball coach at UNC Pembroke,” said CFCA athletic director Al Myatt. “He coached Ben Miller’s son, Charlie, on the AAU level.”
Eddings was a graduate assistant at UNC Pembroke after receiving a degree in physical education from East Carolina. He is working on a master’s degree and will be teaching physical education at CFCA.
Eddings spent one year as an assistant coach at ELEV8 Sports Institute in Delray Beach, Florida, which produced numerous college basketball players while also serving as a training center for multiple NBA and FIBA professionals.
Eddings played on the high school level at Purnell Swett.
The Eagles were coached last season by J.D. Johnson, who decided to join the staff at Freedom Christian.
All six teams in the Sandhills Athletic Conference made the state playoffs in 2018-19 in boys basketball.
“Competing in this conference will be a challenge, but it’s one our young guys will embrace and learn through,” Eddings said. “The chance to work out and play in front of college coaches on a regular basis should motivate our young men to prepare at the level needed to be successful in this powerhouse of a conference.”
