The Harnett County Board of Commissioners approved agreements with four municipalities for School Resource Officer funding.

By a 4-0 vote commissioners approved an agreement which allows the county to fund SRO positions in Angier, Lillington, Erwin and Dunn. Coats is set to revisit the matter during its town board meeting tonight.

Under the terms of the agreement, the county will provide funds for each school’s officer salary, training and equipment. The agreement allows each town to supply local police officers in lieu of Harnett County Sheriff’s deputies. Should a municipality decline to take part, the sheriff’s office would provide a deputy for the school.

During the same meeting, commissioners also approved a request from the sheriff’s office to accept a grant from the Office of Justice Program FY 18 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant.

The grant, which totals $20,194, will be used to purchase laptops, software or other IT equipment or other equipment used for investigative purposes.

In other business, the commissioners approved a donation from Harnett County Emergency Services to Dunn Emergency Services of an enclosed trailer. Dunn Emergency Services will use the trailer to transport materials and equipment when providing fire prevention public education to the citizens of Harnett County.
