CHARLOTTE — Campbell split games on day two of the Green and White Classic with a 9-1 win over Delaware State in five innings and a 4-3 extra-innings loss to Charlotte.
The Camels move to 6-8 on the year following today’s split. Delaware State drops to 0-10 while Charlotte improves to 9-6.
Delaware State 1
Campbell scored seven runs in the first inning and cruised to a 9-1 win over Delaware State in five innings.
Kynadi Tipler started the scoring for Campbell on her single to center field. Kayla Fredendall followed it up with another single, scoring Tipler on the play.
Campbell loaded the bases as Cassie Wancheck took first after getting hit by a pitch and a walk drawn by Kiana Jones. Claudia Ware added another walk which plated Fredendall from third.
Noemi Cortez cleared the bases, scoring three runs on a double to right center. Alexa Pagano followed with a double, scoring Cortez. Destini England followed with a RBI triple hit to the gap in left center to make the score 7-0, Campbell.
The Hornets added a run in the fifth inning as Hannah Crumlish reached third following a Campbell fielding error. Jordan Casey followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate a run.
Danielle Northrup doubled to left center to start the fifth inning while Cortez capped things off early with her first career home run to left field, giving Campbell a 9-1 run-rule victory.
Megan Richards (2-0) picked up her second win of the season after pitching 3.0 innings in relief, striking out two with one hit and one run. Andrea Johnson took the loss after giving up five runs on two hits and two walks in 0.1 innings.
Charlotte 4, Campbell 3
Campbell dropped game two of the day to Charlotte in a 12-inning marathon, lasting three hours and 47 minutes.
The 49ers scored one run in the first and second to take a 2-0 lead, but the Camels bounced back in the third inning to tie the game.
Tipler hit her third home run of the season on a solo shot to left field. Wancheck followed with a double to right center as Mandy Curbeira entered as a pinch-runner.
Cortez scored the tying run in Curbeira after her single to right center, knotting the game up at 2-2.
The tie lasted until the sixth where the 49ers scored a run on a CU error, taking a 3-2 lead.
Campbell broke the tie the next inning as England doubled to left center. Fredendall followed with a hit to center field, scoring England on the play.
The 49ers threatened after putting a runner at second, but relief pitcher Georgeanna Barefoot forced a groundout to end the seventh inning.
Charlotte put the pressure on again in the eighth, this time loading the bases. Barefoot got the Camels out of the jam again, forcing a pop-out to end the scare.
The Camels would load the bases in unconventional fashion in the top of the 12th as Tipler reached on an error, Fredendall walked and Wancheck was hit by a pitch. The Camels were held off as Charlotte squeezed out of the jam by getting a force out at third on a fielder’s choice.
Charlotte would go on to score the winning run as Cori Henderson crossed the plate after a wild pitch in a bases-loaded situation.
Barefoot (3-3) took the loss but pitched 5.2 masterful innings, allowing four hits and striking out eight. Carson Pace (3-3) earned the win after pitching the final nine innings, allowing five hits and one run. Kayla Howald started the game for Campbell, pitching 5.2 innings and striking out eight.
Campbell returns for the final day of the Green and White Classic bright and early tomorrow with a 9:00 a.m. rematch with Delaware State.
